Landscape attribute:

Between the towns of Mohlenice and Olomouc, the Morava River meanders through a large alluvial plain like a blue artery. It washes up flat gravel sediments, home to Charadrius dubius (Little Ringed Plover) and Actitis hypoleucos (common sandpiper), and the steep banks are home to Castor fiber (European beaver) and Alcedo atthis (kingfisher). If we imagine Moravia River to be an artery, the heart of the area would be the alluvial forest, which, together with rural dam system have served as a prevention against deluge since the Middle Ages. Temporary pools are without doubt the most remarkable alluvial forests biotopes, where rare crustaceans occur in spring. Due to unique natural qualities, a couple of small-scale protected areas (the Ramena řeky Moravy and Vrapač national nature reserves, Litovelské Luhy nature reserve) have been designated. The wetland meadow complex at the edge of Olomouc city should be mentioned (Plané Loučky and Chomutovské Jezero nature reserves - an important ornithological locality). The wetland part of the PLA was added to the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance. The second part of the PLA consists of  Doubrava massif, slightly corrugated uplands, where, thanks to sensible management (Lichtenstein domain),  the oakwood complex was  conserved in the past. On the southern slopes above the Morava River (Doubrava nature reserve) numerous thermophilous plants grow as far as  the most northern point of its occurrence. On the other bank of the Morava River  is the Třesín national nature monument. It dominates the northeastern part of the PLA landscape. Its caves, thermophilous meadows and forest ecosystems contrast with the Morava River’s alluvial plain.
